Topic: God’s will
Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
James 4:15, ESV
Anyone who knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, is sinning.
James 4:17, NCV
I choose to use two DIFFERENT translations of these verses to emphasize a point that should be obvious, but too often, is not:
It is the will of the Father for us to do good, so when in doubt, do the last GOOD or RIGHT thing that you know was Him.
At times, believers spend half of their lives trying to hear the voice of God and the other half of their time avoiding what He said. We have a knack for waiting for the perfect scenario, allowing precious hours, days, weeks and years of our lives spinning our wheels within the context of finding “His perfect plan for our lives.” Shame on us. There is NEVER a time when doing the right thing, a good thing, will EVER be frowned upon by our God. “For what you have done for the least of these, you have done for Me” should be a phrase that haunts our daily thoughts. What good have I done for Him, on His behalf, for my fellow man?
I choose to use the NCV translation for verse 17 because of its “present tense” use of the ’s’ word, sin. How many of us are sinning, simply because we have not done something good or right today? I believe that James’ point throughout his entire letter is simply this: do instead of going to committee. And there are SO MANY good things we can do: love, serve, listen, give, go, inspire, forgive, pray, read, learn and so many other actions. But equally important is WHO we do good to and for: family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances, enemies, political foes, members of another religion, people who do not look like us, whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, the LGBTQ community, people who will never be able to repay you, every Tom, Dick and Harry you know and the last person who just really annoyed the snot of you. To do ANYTHING less is both SINNING and OUT OF GOD”S WILL.
Thank You for loving us, even though we are a mess. May we begin to see our lives as incomplete when we fail to do Your simple will of good and right. Forgive us for continuing to sin in areas that should be so obvious for us to get right. Show us grace and mercy, so that we may show grace and mercy to others. You are awesome. And Your will is obtainable. Help us to do it.
In Jesus’ name,
