Topic: Life & Calling
For then I would have lain down and been quiet;
I would have slept; then I would have been at rest,
with kings and counselors of the earth
who rebuilt ruins for themselves,
or with princes who had gold,
who filled their houses with silver.
Job 3:13-15, ESV
There are times in life when we think the world would have been better off without us.
I will admit it—the reason I found this passage of scripture intriguing is directly related to its use in the first, Tom Cruise-starring Mission Impossible movie! I suppose I have read it before, but I really never questioned the context and how it does or does not relate to its purpose in the movie. While the connection is loose but entertaining, for many of us, we question our value in the world. Much like another movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, we sometimes wish we could see what the world would be like without us—what would change, who would care and how would the world be better (or worse) if we had not existed. Our lives, whether we see it daily or not, are valuable to Him and to others—more than we may ever know.

Thank You for life—even the messy parts. Too often I get down on myself without realizing that there ARE those people who need me. Help me to be present for their sake. And mine!
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
